The People Storm the Palace 2016 - The People's Theatre Project's 5th Anniversary Celebration

The People’s Theatre Project's life-affirming night of art and inspiration honoring Pulitzer prize winning author Junot Díaz and director of community pediatrics at Columbia University Medical Center Dr. Dodi Meyer. The annual benefit performance will feature social justice inspired performances by New Yorkers of all ages and live Latin Jazz by Annette A. Aguilar and StringBeans.

Scores of kids, teens and adults are set to take over the United Palace Theatre in a life-affirming night of art and inspiration called The People Storm the Palace. Featuring selected works from People's Theatre Project's 5th anniversary season, this one-night only event will celebrate what is possible when neighbors unite for creative action.

This event is part of Northern Manhattan's annual Uptown Arts Stroll produced by the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance. Learn more about the over 100 events during June's Stroll at: http://www.artstroll.com/

The People Storm the Palace is a milestone event for community-based arts organization People's Theatre Project. For the first time in its 5-year history, its full line-up of school and community-based programs will share the spotlight as actors, ages 5 to 75, will present highlights from the current season of collaboratively-created theatre pieces in a swift 90-minute vaudeville style event. "Expect to see kids doing circus yoga while dressed as their favorite fruits and vegetables in one moment, and teens performing their own poetry about the street they live on in the next moment, meanwhile a middle school Macbeth and Lady Macbeth duo are waiting in the wings", explains the group's co-executive and program director, Mino Lora. "And be ready to hop on stage yourself when our adult actors perform one of their interactive plays. Oh yes, we are shaking things up. We really are storming the palace!"

The cast of The People Storm the Palace is comprised of nearly 100 community actors who have taken part throughout the year in one of the 13 ensemble groups that People's Theatre Project's current season has been host to. Each of these groups has gone through a facilitated process of working together with a professional teaching artist to create their own original piece of theatre performed for their friends, family and the community at one or more neighborhood venues including the Morris-Jumel Mansion, The Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center, the Wintergarden Plaza at the Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, or school classrooms and auditoriums.

The Storm event will bring the season's most electric moments to the stage of Washington Heights 3,500 seat United Palace Theatre. "We've performed at the Palace a number of times now, and I'm still floored every time I step on to the massive stage", says co-executive and managing director Bob Braswell. "This event will leave a big impression on our actors. They will remember performing in this magnificent room for the rest of their lives."
